Assistant Wastewater Operator

The Village of Spencer has an immediate opening for a new Assistant Wastewater Operator position. The Village operates a 520,000 gallon per day extended aeration oxidation ditch with mechanical solids handling equipment and chemical phosphorus removal. Our system serves several large industrial customers and has a significant hauled in waste component. We are in the process of a $3 Million solids treatment and handling upgrade scheduled to go on line in September and are pursuing an aggressive capital improvement program.

This is an entry level position for a motivated individual with the potential for advancement based on job performance, education, and certification. The Assistant Operator will have the opportunity to develop a wide variety of technical skills and competencies while working with seasoned staff. New DNR regulations concerning phosphorus and CMOM, and changes in solids handling relative to our current upgrade project, continue to increase the responsibilities of the wastewater department. The Assistant Operator will be encouraged to develop new procedures and to take ownership of various aspects of the system.

The Assistant Operator‘s primary responsibilities will be to operate, monitor, maintain, and trouble-shoot the wastewater treatment system and its processes. This work involves responsibility for the technical aspects of treatment plant and collection system operations, maintenance, and compliance with state and federal regulations. The majority of this work will be performed under the direction of the Lead WWTP Operator, and the supervision of the Village Administrator. This position will respond to emergencies 24/7, will participate in weekend rotations/on call duties every six weeks, and will be responsible for the system during the Lead Operator’s absence.

A High School diploma or GED is necessary. A Technical, Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Wastewater Treatment, Natural Resources, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required. The position requires Wisconsin DNR Wastewater Operator Basic Level Certification with (A1) Biological Treatment-Suspended Growth, (B) Solids Separation, (C) Solids Treatment, (D) Disinfection, (L) Laboratory, (P) Phosphorus, and (SS) Sanitary Sewer Collection System subcategories, or the ability to obtain full certification within a reasonable amount of time. A WI CDL with airbrake endorsement is required within 60 days.

Good vision, hearing, and manual dexterity are necessary, as is the ability to lift up to 50 pounds unaided. The Village has a well-established health and safety program. The ability to enter confined spaces and to participate in a confined space rescue service is necessary. The position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

The starting wage for this position ranges between $16.21 and $20.87 depending on experience, education, and certification.
