CITY OF BROOKFIELD Employment Opportunity for Department of Human Resources ENGINEERING/SURVEY TECHNICIAN

PURPOSE:  The Engineering Survey/Technician performs paraprofessional level work coordinating the survey and construction activities of various public works projects including topographic survey, construction staking, as-built survey, and Digger’s Hotline markings.  The incumbent is responsible for ensuring quality survey work is completed for various City departments and ensures public works activities are performed in accordance with City specifications, policies, and ordinances.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Competently operates survey instruments, including total station, data collector, theodolite level, and various hand tools.
  • Competently gathers and displays survey data, including topological and design data.
  • Performs survey work for various City departments as requested, including basemap preparation and field documentation.
  • Assists engineers in design layout of projects by staking, measuring and calculating.
  • Calculates material measurements.
  • Performs engineering and mapping drafting work as required.
  • Assists with permits and the Digger’s Hotline program.
  • Communicates with contractors and engineers regarding construction projects.
  • Maintains a daily record of all work performed, records measurements, and completes daily reports.
  • Maintains field notes with calculations, entering notes into computer filing system.
  • Records all angles, distances, and descriptions for each job.
  • Utilizes and continually updates computer software technology skills.
  • Coordinates with supervisor to manage work schedules and project priorities.
  • Promotes and maintains positive departmental public relations and image with customers, which include other City departments and staff, developers, contractors, engineers, property owners and the community in general.
  • Responds or refers complaints.
  • Answers questions regarding location of properties, utility locations, etc. Acts as a liaison between the contractor, City administrative staff, and the general public.

THE REQUIREMENTS:

Engineering Technician II*:

  1. An Associate degree as an Engineering Technician.
  2. A minimum of four (4) years’ experience with construction plan reading, surveying, drafting, or public works inspection.
  3. Valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License.

Engineering Technician I*:

  1. An Associate degree as an Engineering Technician.
  2. At least two (2) years’ experience with construction plan reading, surveying, drafting, and public works inspection.
  3. Valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License.

Equivalent combinations of training and experience will be considered.

* The City has the right to fill the Engineering Technician position vacancy at either the I or II level based and knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.

2023 SALARY RANGE:   Engineering Technician II:   Pay Range: 126 – $34.56-$39.51 per hour with excellent benefits.

                                          Engineering Technician I:     Pay Range: 121 – $28.41-$32.48 per hour with excellent benefits.

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following:  training and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods.  The Department of Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations.  Oral examinations may include written exercises.  Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
