Wastewater Treatment Operator

City of Fond du Lac is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Treatment Operator.  This full-time position reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent and will perform technical, skilled, and manual work.   Duties will include monitoring, operation, and routine maintenance and minor repair of the equipment used in the wastewater treatment plant.  Main areas of focus will be the headworks, the secondary treatment process, the anaerobic digestion process, the solids handling system which includes polymer make-up and centrifuge operation, and the disinfection process (UV system), as well as related work as required.

Various duties include:  Performing process-related lab tests in accordance with established procedures and schedules such as MLSS test, pH, DO, and settleability.   Monitoring and operating the activated sludge system, making adjustments to the chemical feed control systems for phosphorus removal, calibration and adjustment of process monitoring probes,  monitoring and operation of side stream de-ammonification process, struvite control and addition of sodium hypochlorite for effluent water (DEW) disinfection.   Operation of the primary and final clarifiers, the return and waste pump operations and associated piping, the main plant control SCADA and storm and sanitary SCADA, investigating “alarm” conditions in the plant and at liftstations, and insuring that corrective action is taken.  Duties will also include on-call duties and performing routine building, equipment, and grounds maintenance work as required, including cleaning all process-related work areas and equipment.  Scheduled hours include rotating weekend work (5 hours on Saturday and Sunday) and rotating holidays.

Recommended requirements:  Graduation from a four-year college or a two-year specialized training program in wastewater treatment including laboratory procedures and an internship at a wastewater treatment facility OR equivalent training and experience.

Possession of a valid Wisconsin “Advanced” wastewater operator certification in subclasses:  A1, B, C, P, and D, or the ability to obtain within 4 years of hire.

SALARY RANGE: We offer a competitive compensation package ($25.63 – $32.95/hour) based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities with potential to receive additional step increases based on meeting and/or exceeding goals/expectations; annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
