City of Fond du Lac Water Utility is accepting applications for a Water Distribution Crew Leader. This position will be under the direct supervision of the Distribution Maintenance Supervisor (DMS) and helps the Supervisor prioritize, plan, and coordinate maintenance work on the distribution system as well as oversees and directs the Water Utility Workers (WUW) on site daily to accomplish the maintenance work.
The successful candidate will have the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the following:
- Assist the DMS with prioritizing and planning water system repairs and routine maintenance.
- Oversee and direct the WUWs on job site to ensure work is done in a timely manner and with good workmanship.
- Monitor and report personnel problems to the DMS.
- Daily coordination of trucking construction materials and equipment to and/or from the job site.
- Electronic and paper record keeping of work performed including employees, equipment, and materials.
- Perform distribution system repairs and maintenance to include tapping and installing new services for utility and outside contractors, repairing water main breaks and leaky services, exercising, repairing and replacing fire hydrants, exercising, repairing and replacing main line valves, and adjusting valve boxes.
- Operate various heavy equipment to complete job tasks as necessary. Oversee trench safety.
- Knowledge of job site restoration after repair work is completed. (concrete, asphalt prep, & landscaping)
- Set up proper traffic control and maintain safe construction work zone practices and procedures.
- Flush hydrants to improve water quality. Take water quality samples during flushing operations to verify water quality and log results (chlorine/turbidity).
- Assist with snow removal from Utility properties located in and around the city. Assist C&M with snow removal downtown and on city streets if necessary.
The position also requires the employee to be available for emergency response during off-shift hours as well as participate in the on-call rotation.
- On-call rotation (Roughly 5 weeks per year when/if fully staffed)
- Emergency response 24/7/365 (water main breaks, service leaks, etc.) 60% response rate is required.
Qualifications include: 4 – 5 years’ experience with utility construction/repairs with 2 years of supervisory experience, heavy equipment experience preferred; working knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials commonly used in public works and water facility maintenance activities; and possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial “Class A” Driver’s License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement
Minimum training and experience required/preferred to perform essential job functions: Graduation from high school or equivalent; and 1 year certificate in utility construction and/or leadership training; and trained in Competent Person, Confined Space Entry, Wisconsin DNR Water Distribution Certificate; and completion of continuing education (18 hours every 3 years). Willing to train the correct candidate.
