Job Description

Introduction

The Racine Wastewater Utility is responsible for the recycling of municipal wastewater for return as a clean resource into Lake Michigan through the operation of advanced computer instrumentation and mechanical equipment. The Utility is designed to treat 36 mgd of regional flow serving the City of Racine, Village of Mount Pleasant, Village of Caledonia, Village of Sturtevant, Village of Elmwood Park, and Village of North Bay.

Position Purpose

The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance in the daily inspection, preventative maintenance, and repair of the mechanical and electrical equipment at the lift stations.

Position’s work week consists of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Lift station mechanics are required to be involved in a rotation for emergency stand-by calls.

Core Functions

  • Exercise valves, maintains and repairs lift station motors, pumps, meters, generators and other major mechanical, electrical and hydraulic units of equipment,
  • Inspects each station as required, reads flow meters and gauges, generator run hours, electric meters, and records them.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on lift station equipment and keeps records of work done on equipment.
  • Performs general station maintenance to keep stations in neat and orderly fashion.
  • Works in conjunction with the sewer cleaning crew and plant staff to identify abnormal and high flow situations, as well as causes for lift station alarms and malfunctions.
  • Sets up 6-inch portable pumps and generators.

Qualifications

  • High School graduation or GED equivalent is required.
  • 5 years of prior verifiable professional mechanical experience working with pumps, compressors, blowers, or engines in an area related to industrial plant or commercial automotive maintenance; or a combination of years and education is preferred.
  • Mechanical training and certification in HVAC, pipefitting or electro-mechanical technology is a plus.
  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Collection Systems Subgrade (SS) certification is required within 1 year of hire.
  • A valid state-issued motor vehicle operating license and Class B CDL is required within 6 months.
