Water System Operations and Maintenance Position

City of Sparta (Pop. 10,025) is seeking applications for this fulltime position with the Water Utility.

POSITION SUMMARY: This is a skilled position involving the operation and maintenance of the city water supply system.  We are seeking qualified candidates that enjoy working outside, have a strong work ethic, self-motivated, detail oriented with good organizational skills for the essential position of Water Operator. The position is under the direction of the Water Utility Superintendent to perform all duties necessary for the installation and maintenance of water distribution facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES

Maintenance and operation of a water production and distribution system.

Monitoring and operation of wells, filter plants, hydrants and valves including data and water sample collection.

Assist in repairs of water main breaks, service leaks and curb boxes.

Install water meters, cross connection inspections, perform leak detection and inspections, customer service complaint investigations, and meter reading.

Tests and records data for meter maintenance.

Ability to complete locate requests.

Ability to perform physical and manual work including lifting, pulling, climbing, standing, and walking.

Ability to work under various weather and working conditions including confined spaces.

Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the general public, board members, administration, supervisors, other City employees, construction contractors, and others.

Ability to take direction, facilitate communication, resolve problems, work individually and as a part of a team.

Ability and strength to fabricate plumbing from ¾” to 12” piping, safely and repetitively lift 50 lbs. and the exertion of physical effort in water repair situations.

Complete annual maintenance on hydrants and valves.

The position also requires the employee to rotating weekend and holiday shifts.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and access to an operable and licensed vehicle.

The candidate shall hold or have the ability to obtain OIT Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Certifications in Groundwater and Distribution within one (1) year under NR 114. Experience in day-to-day Water Utility operations a plus.
