The City of Janesville is seeking a motivated and responsible Assistant Water Pump Operator to join our Water Division. This role supports the maintenance and operation of the municipal water distribution system and works closely with the Water Utility Superintendent. About the Position
The Assistant Water Pump Operator performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks to support water pumping operations. This position helps ensure pumping stations, wells, and related equipment operate safely and efficiently. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently while demonstrating sound judgment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in operating and adjusting pumping station equipment, including valves, motors, pumps, and chemical feeders.
- Maintain pumping stations in clean, orderly condition.
- Review and monitor the SCADA system and coordinate adjustments to optimize system performance.
- Perform routine maintenance such as lubricating equipment, packing valves, and cleaning components.
- Participate in required WDNR water sampling.
- Respond to emergency callouts and assist during non-business hours as needed.
- Support repair and maintenance activities for wells and pumps.
- Assist with customer inquiries regarding water quality, taste, odor, and pressure.
- Follow all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions or incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least two (2) years of experience in water utility operations or related pumping system maintenance.
- Ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- WDNR Groundwater and Distribution Certification (or ability to obtain within 12 months).
- College or technical coursework in water resources or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Successful candidates will bring:
- Working knowledge of water well construction, pumping systems, and SCADA operations.
- Strong communication, customer service, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Commitment to safe work practices and high ethical standards.
Working Conditions
This position requires frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions, physical effort including lifting up to 100 lbs., and occasional exposure to chemicals, noise, and confined spaces. A regular Monday–Friday schedule (7 a.m.–3 p.m.) is required, along with availability for emergency response as needed.
