Job Summary

The City of Neillsville is seeking a motivated and dependable individual to join our Water & Wastewater Department as a Heavy Equipment / Water and Wastewater Operator. This full-time position is responsible for operating, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities and underground utility systems.

Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Head Sewer Operator and Head Water Operator. Time is split approximately 50/50 between both utilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Water Utility

  • Perform regulatory sampling, monitoring, and testing
  • Assist with installation and inspection of water mains and services
  • Maintain wells, treatment plant equipment, hydrants, and valves
  • Install and troubleshoot water meters and radio-read systems
  • Participate in on-call rotation and weekend/holiday plant checks

Wastewater Utility

  • Conduct process control sampling and compliance testing
  • Assist with installation and inspection of sewer mains and services
  • Maintain treatment plant equipment and lift stations
  • Operate heavy equipment including sewer jetter and vac truck
  • Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance

Additional Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures
  • Assist with citywide snow removal operations
  • Perform grounds maintenance and other assigned duties

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months
  • Ability to obtain required Wisconsin DNR Water and Wastewater certifications within 3 years
  • Ability to work 40+ hours per week and participate in on-call rotation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in municipal water or wastewater operations
  • Heavy equipment operation experience
  • Mechanical, electrical, or plumbing troubleshooting skills

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and 100 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and equipment operation
