The Role Responsibilities

Our Public Works crew is staffed with skilled and dedicated individuals who embrace and support the growth of our community and Public Works Department.  Their workday varies, as they ensure that our community services are functioning properly and looking great!  This means that areas like water, sewer, storm water utilities, roadway, shoulder, and ditch maintenance, and more, are maintained and operated as needed and expected.

Role Requirements

Our newest crew member will possess a high school diploma or GED, knowledge of municipal water, sewer and storm water, road construction and maintenance, valid state driver’s license and Class B CDL (or ability to obtain CDL within 6 months of hire) with a good driving record.  The person will have mechanical and troubleshooting experience they can explain.  Prior experience in a public works-related field is highly desirable. Experience with basic park and grounds maintenance (e.g., mowing/trimming, litter pickup, minor repairs) is also desired.

Hours and On-call schedule

Public Works Members are hourly employees scheduled for 40 hours per week.  Regular work hours are Monday – Thursday, 6:30AM – 3:30PM and Friday, 6:30AM -10:30AM year-round. This position will also require being part of a rotating on-call schedule for additional compensation and call-in pay.

Wage and Benefits

This position is non-exempt. The starting pay is $27.35 per hour. Employees at the Town of Ledgeview enjoy a competitive benefits package including enrollment in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), health, dental, and vision insurance, and other fringe benefits as well.

Job Description:

Position Summary:

As part of the Public Works Department, the Public Works and Utility Crew Member perform a variety of manual work assignments and routine tasks under the direction of the Public Works Operations Manager. The position includes tasks related to water utilities, stormwater, sanitary systems, and general public works.

Essential Functions:

The duties listed below are the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions. Other duties may be assigned that align with the summary of the position.

Water:

  •      Exercise valves on a scheduled and ad hoc basis to purge contaminants.
  •      Perform cross-connection inspections, documenting findings and submitting reports.
  •      Inspect, repair, and maintain water meters, ensuring proper calibration.
  •      Safely repair mainline valves and curb boxes with minimal disruption to residents.
  •      Install hydrant extensions and test modifications to ensure proper functionality.
  •      Perform residual chlorine testing as required, documenting results.

Storm and Sanitary Systems:

  •      Inspect and maintain manholes, catch basins, and sanitary lift stations.
  •      Perform inspections and maintenance of stormwater detention basins.

Public Works:

  •      Assist with general public works projects, including tree removal, park maintenance, and minor road repairs.
  •      Perform routine road and sidewalk maintenance following safety protocols.
  •      Assist with snow removal and other winter operations using powered equipment.
  •      Perform routine facility maintenance, including cleaning and minor repairs.

Administrative and General:

  •      Inspect contract service provider work to verify completeness and operational readiness.
  •      Respond to and document utility service requests such as disconnections and reconnections.
  •      Maintain records related to inspections, water supply, and maintenance activities.
  •      Ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment after use.
  •      Adhere to safety standards, assessing risk to minimize accidents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this position successfully, an individual must demonstrate regular, predictable attendance and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge and skill required. The individual must be able to successfully pass background checks.

Education/Certification/Licensure:

  •      High school diploma or GED is required.
  •      Two years of related experience in public works or utilities is preferred.
  •      Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.
  •      Class B CDL certification is desired.
  •      Wisconsin Grade 1 Waterworks Operator Certification with subclass certification for distribution and groundwater is desired. The hired employee may be eligible to be sponsored by the Town of Ledgeview to become certified.
  •      Wisconsin Wastewater Operator Sanitary Sewer Collection Certification (“SS”) is preferred. The hired employee may be eligible to be sponsored by the Town of Ledgeview to become certified.
  •      Certification in Confined Space Entry and Competent Person must be obtained within two years of employment.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  •      Knowledge of water, stormwater, and sanitary systems maintenance.
  •      Ability to operate heavy machinery, including dump trucks and power equipment.
  •      Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods.
  •      Ability to work effectively in inclement weather.
  •      Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  •      Ability to read and interpret meter dials and perform arithmetic computations accurately.

  •      Must have the stamina to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  •      Exposure to loud noises, dust, fumes, and chemicals used in public works and utility operations.
