Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

City of Stanley is accepting applications for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. This position is responsible for controlling and maintaining the wastewater treatment plant and sanitary sewer collection system to ensure safe and compliant treatment of municipal wastewater.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate, regulate, and maintain wastewater treatment plant equipment, buildings, and grounds
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on plant, lift station, and sanitary sewer collection system equipment
  • Safely operate heavy equipment including loader, plow truck, jetter truck, skid steer, and related machinery
  • Collect samples and conduct process control testing; evaluate and document results
  • Perform basic laboratory analyses in accordance with WI DNR requirements
  • Coordinate sludge pumping, wasting, and related operations
  • Clean, inspect, schedule, and maintain accurate records of collection system maintenance
  • Respond to emergency situations including sewer backups, power outages, snow and ice events, high water, and washouts
  • Perform routine cleaning and snow removal duties at the treatment plant
  • Assist with maintaining operation and maintenance records
  • Assist other City departments as needed

Work Schedule

After completion of training, the normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a rotating weekend and holiday schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain within one year of employment
  • Ability to obtain WI DNR Basic Wastewater Operator Certification within three years
  • Commitment to working toward Basic Water Operator Certification during employment
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and potential future shift rotations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to diagnose equipment failures
  • Ability to work with basic electricity, plumbing, and instrumentation
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and software
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, contractors, and vendors
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and janitorial duties as needed

Compensation and Benefits

The starting wage begins at $28.00 per hour and may increase based on qualifications. This position includes a fringe benefit package and paid overtime for weekend and holiday rotations.
