Village of Spencer is accepting applications for a full-time Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. This position plays a vital role in protecting public health and the environment by operating and maintaining the Village’s wastewater treatment plant and sanitary sewer collection system in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.
The successful candidate will be a dependable, detail-oriented professional with wastewater-treatment knowledge, sound judgment, mechanical aptitude, and a strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
Compensation and status
Hourly wage: $29.91–$31.93 per hour.
Starting wage within the range will be based on qualifications, relevant wastewater-treatment experience, required and additional certifications, and demonstrated job-related skills.
This position is represented by Teamsters Local 662 and is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Primary responsibilities:
Operate and monitor wastewater-treatment processes to meet WPDES permit requirements.
Perform process-control and laboratory testing, including testing for TSS, BOD5, total phosphorus, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, and pH.
Collect, process, preserve, and coordinate shipment of samples for outside laboratory testing.
Maintain laboratory quality-assurance and quality-control procedures and accurate operational, laboratory, and maintenance records.
Prepare and submit required regulatory reports.
Perform preventive maintenance, basic corrective maintenance, plant housekeeping, and safety-related duties.
Operate and maintain sanitary sewer collection-system equipment, including gravity sewers, lift stations, and force mains.
Coordinate contractor work and collaborate with the Wisconsin DNR, engineering firms, industries, and other outside agencies as needed.
Train and provide direction to the Assistant Wastewater Operator and other Public Works employees on wastewater-related work.
Participate in the on-call duty rotation, currently scheduled once every six weeks.
Assist with other Public Works activities, including snow removal, lawn care, and water-main breaks, as operational needs allow.
Minimum qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Valid Wisconsin driver’s license; CDL preferred.
Wisconsin DNR Advanced Wastewater Operator certification with A1—Suspended Growth, B—Solids Separation, C—Solids Treatment, D—Disinfection, L—Laboratory, P—Total Phosphorus, and SS—Collection System subclasses, or the ability to obtain full certification within a reasonable timeframe.
Strong communication, organizational, decision-making, mathematical, computer, and time-management skills.
Ability to safely perform outdoor and indoor work; use required personal protective equipment; enter confined spaces and excavations when trained and properly equipped; and lift and move up to 50 pounds without assistance.
Technical education in wastewater treatment, natural resources, biology, chemistry, engineering, or a related field is preferred. Two to three years of wastewater-treatment experience is also preferred.
