DPW Worker – Operator II
The City of Lake Geneva is a world class resort and tourist area of 8000 Citizens, however, populations can more than triple overnight with many festival weeks having in excess of 30-
40,000 visitors. Public Works is charged with all expected City services including streets, cemeteries, forestry, buildings and grounds, public restrooms, parks and lakefront as well
as a large roll in the many festivals and events 7 days a week.
General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate skilled trades work assisting with public works installation, maintenance and repair projects, operating equipment, performing a variety of manual labor, and related work as apparent or assigned in all weather. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Foreman. Due to the tourist nature of the City, maintenance staff are required to work weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule. The City does not enjoy separate departments under DPW therefore all maintenance workers are required to work at all positions to include but not limited to; streets, parks, buildings and grounds, cemeteries, forestry, lakefront and storm water. Extreme early start times are typical year-round (12am-5am) and on-call status for inclement weather and/or emergencies is mandatory.
Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions
Operates light and heavy trucks, tractors, light and heavy equipment when assigned.
Operates hand tools and small equipment in performing assigned tasks.
Performs and participates in all street maintenance including street sweeping, snow plowing and removal, salting/sanding city streets, parking lots and bike paths. Painting curbs, cross walks and parking stalls. Tree work, brushing program, cleaning storm drains, maintains and installs street lights, street signs, mows, fills pot holes and cracks and other various maintenance as assigned.
Maintain and repair all traffic signals in the City to include emergency vehicle pre-emptive systems.
Assist Police and Fire with any emergency situation as needed.
Performs park maintenance including, grass mowing, trimming, hole filling, lawn seeding, rolling, fertilizing, etc., mulching, maintaining park facilities, restroom cleaning and maintenance, cleaning park grounds, solid waste and other various maintenance activities.
Performs work in cemeteries to include excavation of graves, grounds maintenance, etc.
Performs facility maintenance for City properties, including cleaning, repair, remodeling and updating to include plumbing, HVAC and electrical, carpentry, roofing, welding and all skilled
trades.
Performs maintenance and repairs on light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
Performs many activities from elevated positions such as ladders, platforms and bucket trucks.
Performs many activities on, in or near bodies of water. Ponds, lake, rivers, etc.
Participate in seminars, classes, trade shows as assigned.
Participate in safety training.
Perform any and all work as assigned in any weather condition.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of; Street and storm drain construction, maintenance and repair practices. Buildings and grounds. The safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of hand tools and equipment to which assigned; ability to safely operate trucks and construction equipment; ability to safely perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Knowledge of and ability to perform skilled trade work such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in vehicle/equipment operation and maintenance, buildings/grounds maintenance, snow plowing or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 75 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100+ pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, carrying, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires pushing or pulling and lifting and requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision (with or without corrective measures); vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (natural and non-natural), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and wearing self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic, machinery).
Special Requirements
Experience operating heavy and light trucks and machinery in a construction/maintenance/landscaping environment. Able to work in elevated work areas. Able to work on, in or near bodies of water.
Valid Class B/air brakes commercial driver’s license required. Certified forklift/industrial truck operator within 6 months of hire. The City participates in the forklift training.
