City of Shawano on the Wolf is seeking a dynamic and approachable leader to be its next Director of Public Works.  Shawano is in Shawano County, which lies in northeastern Wisconsin between the major economic and cultural centers of Wausau and Green Bay. This location also provides easy access to the Fox Valley area. Shawano has had excellent growth in recent years, presenting both opportunities and challenges.  The city desires to maintain the pace of growth with a balance of residential, commercial, and industrial development. As a result of this goal, City planning places great focus on economic development objectives and implementation strategies.  However, enhancing the community’s authentic small-town character and attaining a high quality of life that is accessible to all community residents remains the heart of the city’s vision for the future.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $105,000 DOQ, with the city providing an excellent benefit package as well. Relocation assistance is also available for this position. The Director reports to the City Administrator and will work closely with other Department Managers.  The city of Shawano is governed by a City Mayor and Six Alderpersons who are elected nonpartisan on staggering 2-year terms.

The 2024 Department operating budget is $12.2M, including Public Works Street Operations & Equipment Maintenance, Water Utility, Sewer Utility, and Storm Water. The City of Shawano Department of Public Works also operates the Shawano County landfill and City waste and recycling transfer station. The Director leads a staff of 22 total employees.

This position requires advanced professional knowledge of modern theories, principles, and practices of public works administration, engineering technology, sewer & water operations, capital project construction management, field maintenance operations, and program development.  Additional knowledge required of applicable laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations governing modern and accepted public works construction, maintenance, and engineering practices.  Requires experience in budget preparation and administration, utility management, and financial management of capital projects as well as effective written and oral communication skills necessary to interact with a wide variety of individuals including members of the public, vendors, contractors, City staff, and elected officials.

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, public administration, business administration applied science (water/wastewater) or a related field is preferred along with 5 or more years in progressively responsible municipal management positions in charge of a variety of public works, water/wastewater staff, and construction projects, or any combination of experience that provides the equivalent knowledge. Previous experience working in the solid waste or recycling industry would be considered a plus.  Shawano also desires a candidate who fosters teamwork and who will support and encourage a positive working environment and professional development opportunities for public works and water/wastewater staff.
