City of Viroqua is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the full-time position of Utility Auxiliary Worker.  As a part of the Water and Wastewater team in the Public Works Department, this position works in the team that maintains the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. During the snow season they will work with the Street Department during snow removal operations.

Duties of this position includes, but not limited to: water meter change outs and water shut offs, watermain/water service and sewer main/lateral repairs, sewer system jetting, water system flushing, valve operation, lift station maintenance, utility locates, mowing, snow removal and heavy equipment operation. The employee will perform a variety of duties related to public works.

This position requires a valid driver’s license and a class B Commercial Driver’s license within 2 months of start. The ideal candidate will also have the following qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Water and wastewater related experience such as pipe laying, plumbing and system maintenance
  • Capable of operating heavy equipment such as a skid loader, end loader, tractor and dump truck with related implements
  • Have knowledge in maintenance of pumps, motors and small engines and basic carpentry skills
  • Able to work both alone and as a member of a team
  • Ability to react quickly and carefully follow instructions in emergency situations
  • Must have good moral character with a willingness to learn and cooperate
  • Basic computer skills including use of email, internet browsers and spreadsheets

Heavy lifting (50 lbs), climbing and exposure to extreme elements is required in this position. The chosen candidate will need to perform duties under stressful conditions. This position will require participation in the Commercial Driver’s License drug and alcohol testing program.

This is an on-call position. Throughout the year the position is on-call one full week per month including weekend duty. There is a required 15-minute response time to emergency call-outs or snow removal. Snow removal season is November 1st to April 15th. The employee is expected to be on-call after hours, weekends and holidays throughout this time.

The City of Viroqua offers this full-time, non-union position, a starting wage of $19.00-$23.00, depending on experience, plus a fringe benefits package. The City of Viroqua is an equal opportunity employer.
